Jal walked off in a hurry leaving Cook and Naomi alone in the hall. “I swear she’s afraid’a me..she did the same thin’ last time.” He leaned on the wall and looked at Naomi with his childish grin, “So Naoms, what brings you to this crazy house of wondas?”

Naomi stared back at Cook, small smirk on her face. “She’s smart, being afraid of you. If I was brighter I’d probably run like her, too.” When she saw him grin, she couldn’t help but smile a bit. There was just something about him, she guessed. Hearing his question though, her smile faltered and she stiffened slightly. “Doesn’t matter.” She shrugged, blowing it off. “Don’t s’pose you’re in here for anything nice, are you?” She said, gesturing to his battered looking hands.

He placed his hands in his pockets and they began to walk the halls. “They found me afta I broke out of jail, for the..MD…thing awhile back, Cook felt awkward bringing up the past about Sophia to Naomi but he never could lie to her for some reason, then I might hav’ went mental on my mom’s house with mah brotha, an’ maybe a few people at a club. An’ now I’m here, doin’ time in a mental house.” He put his arm around her once more but his grin wasn’t there, he stared at the patient door labeled ‘Effy Stonem’. He tried to shove Naomi along before she would notice, but he was probably to late.

Naomi listened to him as she walked side by side with Cook. She clenched her fists at the memory, snapping her eyes shut quickly before sighing, calming again. She listened to his story intently, figuring as much. She felt connected to Cook in a weird way, like they had an unspoken bond of sorts. Feeling him stop for a small second, she turned to look at him, her eyes following where he was looking. Seeing the door Naomi swallowed for a second, feeling a new range of emotions. How many people were in here that she knew? Cook’s shove knocked her back into reality, her staring at him for a second before sighing. She didn’t want to ask, seeing his changed demeanor. Naomi followed him, her mind filling with thoughts again.

Effy had just made it back after the session with Foster when she heard a bump on the wall. Something told her to check outside, so she poked her head out of her door. She saw Cook walking away with his hand around another girl..she looked so familiar. It finally hit her, “Naomi?! Cook!”

Cook looked back and almost fell over tripping over Naomi. “Eff..uh, Naomi’s here.” He shook his head rolling his eyes thinking about how stupid he felt. Obviously Naomi was here, he thought to himself. “Spliff outside anyone?” Cook said to brake the ice, he kept his arm around Naomi, she was like his anchor keeping him from Effy.

Naomi huffed for a second, wishing that she could speak for herself for once. She saw how Cook was acting though, and she didn’t want to mess with that. Gesturing for Effy to walk beside her, she smiled brightly as she followed Cook. “Eff!” She said excitedly, keeping her voice down slightly. Even though she wasn’t extremely close with Effy, they were friends. And she needed that right now. Feeling Cook’s arm around her she shot her an apologetic look, keeping a small distance between the two.

“Aye Naomi, long time no see.” She smiled at her and gave her a quick hug. But she  kept her eyes off Cook, she felt awkward seeing him. Before the incident in the cafeteria, the last time she saw him was when he denied her. He didn’t want her anymore, and she hated that. “I would yah, but I already have plans..plus I don’t want to intrude you know?” She stood beside Naomi for a moment, wondering what to do.

Cook rubbed his neck taking his hand off Naomi. He wondered where she was going, Freds maybe. “That’s…cool, plans.” Cook tried not to look at her but he couldn’t help but catch eyes with her. He wanted her and it showed all over, mostly in his eyes. “Naomi, shall we continue outside?” He gave Effy a small salute watching her walk off for a bit longer hoping she’d look back. “We got some chattin’ to do Naoms.”

Naomi bit down on her lip, feeling awkward in the middle of the situation. Hearing Cook speak, she muttered a small “See you around,” to Effy before following Cook again, staying close to him even though he removed his arm. “Chatting? What about then?” She said curiously, smiling at him despite everything as they walked outside.

Cook and Naomi made it outside towards a small grass hill. He took his sweatshirt off and laid it on the ground for Naomi to sit on. He smiled as they sat but it soon disappeared, “Bit awkward..yah..” He said referring to Effy. “Fred’s here too…they’re..yah..togetha..” Cook bit at his lip and tried to change the subject quickly, “So…where’s..Emily..” He asked looking over at her. He knew something was bothering her, something was eating her up inside.

Naomi sat down on the ground, admiring Cook as he laid his sweatshirt down. She curled her knees up to her chest, looking upwards at the sky as he spoke. She tried to clear her head, but seeing Effy and Cook changed things. Nothing seemed certain anymore, not that it ever did, really. Sighing, she turned as he heard her name. “Dunno…somewhere better than here, probably. Hopefully.” She wrapped her arms around her legs, focusing on the clouds as she let out a shaky breath.

He began to get worried, Naomi and Emily were special. They were, right together. If they couldn’t make it then Cook felt there was no hope for him ever to have anything. He put his hand on her back rubbing it softly, “Sorry, he laughed to himself, look at us, back where we were before. Lost, alone, and now mental.” He leaned back and looked at the sky with Naomi, occasionally looking over to find her just biting her lip. “You’ll be all right though, I know you Naoms.”

Naomi simply nodded, leaning her head on his shoulder. She couldn’t help but smile a bit, even if the humor was much too dark. Cook didn’t mince his words, but he wasn’t cold. It was nice. “Yeah. We’ll be alright.” She said as she moved her head in closer to his shoulder. “We’ll be alright.” She repeated, half to herself as she smiled up at the sky.

He dropped his head on hers and spoke, “I gave her up..she said she loved me back an’ I gave her up.” Cook was referring to Effy but Naomi knew already. They were in the same position as before about a year ago. Sitting staring at the sky talking about the people they love. “I don’ know if it was right, but it’s breakin’ me apart even more.” He clenched his jaw and picked at the grass trying to calm himself.

Naomi relaxed as she felt him rest on her, feeling like they were in the same position they were before. Things were a bit different, they were a bit different, but it was the same. They still had each other. Sighing, she moved closer to him. “You can’t give up on someone you love. You just can’t.” She said wistfully, feeling broken as she spoke. She didn’t want Cook to end up angry at the world. He deserved to be happy more than anyone else. Seeing him pick at some grass, she put her hand over his, trying to calm him.

Her hand touched his and Cook gave a small smile. “I know she’s happier with Freds, I can’t stop that. I’m workin’ at not fuckin’ up peoples lives anymore.” It was a shock to himself to hear it from his mouth. He wanted Effy to be happy but it was too painful to see it happen for him. “You shouldn’t give up on love eitha.” Cook looked a mess, probably had the longest day of his life. “I feel beat to shit, think I’ll head in soon. Sleep for eternity. Comin’ in or admirin’ the sky a bit more?” Cook jumped to his feet waiting for Naomi to respond.

Hearing Cook speak, she was surprised at his words. It wasn’t something she’d hear from him, ever. She was proud of him. Maybe he could be happy, too. Naomi stared up at Cook, squinting from the sun. “Might stay here for a bit. I’ll see you soon though, yeah?” Naomi smiled, happy she had Cook back. She needed him, whether she’d admit it or not.

After her shower, Jal ventured back out of her room. Something she was glad she was use to doing now. She walked passed the recreation room and down the hall when she bumped into another girl. Jal had never seen this girl before but she was in a friendly mood. She extended her hand, a little too anxious and said “Jal.” With a smile.

Naomi wandered around the place, looking for something to keep her mind occupied. Anything at this point, really. She wished she could just forget everything for a little bit, but her brain was having other ideas. Sighing, she walked through the hallway, searching for something new. Accidentally bumping into a girl she flinched for a second, before smiling politely at her. She wasn’t totally heartless. Seeing the girl extend her hand, Naomi took it and shook it, smiling a bit awkwardly. “Naomi.”

Jal noticed Cook behind the Naomi girl and smiled at him. “The food fight was fun…uhm you two know each other? I ran into someone I know too, it gets you thinking, how many people are here that we all know…” Jal trailed off realizing she was talking too much.

Cook turned Naomi around and gave her a big smile, “You missed the fight Naoms, started by me of course.” He nudged Jal, “Glad you lightened up a bit.” He slung his arm around Naomi knowing how agitated it would make her. “So yes this is Jal, great girl, shy though.” He said with a wink. “So Naoms, you finally came to willy waggle with the cookie monsta?”

Naomi turned her nose up a bit as he wrapped his arm around her, weighing her down in the process. She was fairly sure that he purposely tried to piss her off at this point. “Shame. Sounds like a load of fun,” She said sarcastically, shooting an off look at him. “Not a chance, Cook.” She said flatly, biting back a small smile in the process. “Nice to meet you though, Jal.” Naomi smiled brighter, happy to see people she knew along with new ones. Even if it was Cook.

Name's Naomi.

Apparently I'm mental. According to everyone else, there isn't much more to tell, is there?
You can fuck off now.
